Why We Created the SWELL Foundation

For years at Swell Retreat, we have operated on a very simple, heart-led philosophy:

we kept saying yes.

When foster families came to us needing a safe, peaceful space to bond and connect, we said yes. When youth groups knocked on our door but couldn't afford the full cost of a stay, we said yes. When everyday families just needed uninterrupted time together away from the noise of the world, we said yes.

We said yes to young people searching for confidence, purpose, and the guidance of trusted adults. And we said yes to specialized programs designed to teach emotional regulation, leadership, responsibility, and service.

For a long time, much of this work was done completely for free or at a deep discount. We personally absorbed those costs because we deeply believed that access to nature and healing mattered more than a profit margin. But as the demand grew, we realized a vital truth: generosity needs a sustainable structure in order to survive and grow.

That is why we officially created the SWELL Foundation.

What is SWELL?

SWELL is an acronym for the core pillars that guide everything we do:

  • Self Mastery

  • Wellness

  • Emotional Strength

  • Leadership

  • Love & Service

The SWELL Foundation exists to strengthen youth, families, veterans, and local communities. We achieve this through outdoor experiences, experiential education, genuine human connection, leadership training, and community service.

A Partnership for Generations

While Swell Retreat provides the physical, beautiful place where this transformative work happens, the SWELL Foundation is the vehicle that makes these experiences accessible to the people who might otherwise never have the opportunity.

This work didn’t actually begin the day we filed the legal paperwork for a nonprofit. The Foundation was created because the work was already happening in our hearts and on our soil—and we want to ensure it continues to change lives for generations to come.

We invite you to learn more, get involved, and help us keep saying "yes" to those who need it most.
