More Than Dirt: How 2,500 Volunteers Carved a Living Legacy

A trail is made of more than dirt.
When you look at the winding paths cutting through the wilderness at Swell Retreat, you aren't just looking at cleared ground. You are looking at a living story of community impact. Over the past three years, approximately 2,500 youth and adults have stepped onto this land, picked up tools, and helped build and maintain more than five miles of trail.
Some of our volunteers arrived knowing how to use every tool in the shed. Others had never worked on a trail a day in their lives. Together, hand by hand, they moved heavy rocks, cleared thick brush, and carefully shaped turns. Along the way, they learned a powerful lesson: their individual effort could become something real—something other people could walk, run, and ride for years to come.
The True Power of Service
That is exactly why service matters to the SWELL Foundation.
A young person may arrive at the property thinking, “I’m just moving dirt.” But the true magic happens when they return later. When they stand on that same path and watch a mountain biker fly past or see a family enjoying a weekend walk, the message shifts entirely. It becomes a deeply rooted belief:
“I helped build this.”
“I can do hard things.”
“My contribution matters.”
The Vision Ahead: Build It. Ride It. Race It.
This trail system is rapidly becoming a premier hub for outdoor recreation, mountain biking, youth education, emotional resilience, and deep community connection. Our ultimate vision is to prepare this terrain for future events and races, making it a lasting, high-quality resource for local families, youth groups, and visitors alike.
Every single section of this trail carries the unique story of someone who showed up and gave what they could. Now, we are expanding the path—and we need your hands to help us do it.
Whether you want to build it, ride it, or race it, there is a place for you here. Most importantly, it is a chance to belong to something bigger than yourself.
